Off-The-Record Working Dinner with H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan

On , in a small, off-the-record working dinner. This was the President's first official visit to the US since his election in 2003.

President Aliyev is the leader of a secular Muslim country with Sunnis and Shiites living peacefully together. Azerbaijan has troops in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq; it has close relations with Israel, and is located just north of Iran, which has a large percentage of ethnic Azeris. Azerbaijan is also an oil and gas-rich Caspian country that has adopted an “evolutionary” model of democratic change.
