The Future of Russian Democracy: Is Putin President for Life?

October 31, 2007, 9:15 AM - 11:30 AM - Hudson Institute, Washington, D.C. Headquarters

Hudson Institute's Pew Briefing Series recently held a conference titled:

The Future of Russian Democracy: Is Putin President for Life?

Russian President Vladimir Putin's controversial visit to Iran and his recent announcement that he is ready to become Russia's prime minister after the 2008 elections raise the spectre of an authoritarian, anti-western Russian state. With the democratic movement inside Russia struggling to influence events, what should or could the United State's role be?

David Satter, Zeyno Baran & Andrei Piontkovsky

To assess the significance of Putin's decision and the future of democracy in Russia, Hudson Institute's Pew Briefing Series hosted a conference that featured Zeyno Baran, Hudson Senior Fellow and Director of the Hudson Center for Eurasian Studies; Andrei Piontkovsky, Visiting Fellow at Hudson and the author of Putin's Soul (Hudson Institute, 2006); and David Satter, Hudson Senior Fellow.

The discussion coincided with the release of Hudson Institute's report on U.S.-Russian relations, U.S.-Russian Relations: Is Conflict Inevitable? which was available at the conference. (To download the report now, please visit www.hudson.org). The panelists took questions from the audience.
