Discussion with Bassam Tibi

March 20, 2008, 3:30 - 5:00 PM - Hudson Institute, Washington, D.C. Headquarters

         Bassam Tibi and Zeyno Baran

On March 20, 2008, Hudson Institute's Center for Eurasian Policy hosted renowned author and political scientist Bassam Tibi for a discussion on Islam in Europe. Syrian by birth, Dr. Tibi moved to Germany in 1962 and naturalized in 1976. He is one of the world's foremost scholars on European Islam. He coined the term "Euro-Islam" to refer to the integration and adaptation of Islam to liberal European values such as democracy and secular governance. Dr. Tibi firmly believes that Islam must be reformed if Europe's Muslims are to successfully integrate.

Dr. Tibi has authored dozens of articles and more than 20 books—his latest being Political Islam, World Politics and Europe, published earlier this year. His works have been translated into 16 languages and he has lectured at more than 30 universities in five continents.
