Russian Identity

December 4, 2008, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM - Hudson Institute, Washington, D.C. Headquarters

London, Illarionov, Piontkovsky, Sestanovich

In Russian Identity, Piontkovsky analyzes the events from early 2006 through the fall of 2008, including the rise of systemic corruption, the cultivation of xenophobia, and a growing assault on independent media, and shows how they reflect the failure of Russia's attempt to enact reforms.

Piontkovsky also examines the centuries' old dispute about the meaning of Russian identity. Does Russia belong to a European culture which respects tolerance, freedom, and individual rights? Or is Russia destined to be a land where servility and submissiveness reign?

Hudson Institute was please to host a panel discussion of Piontkovsky's newest book. Piontkovsky was joined by Stephen  Sestanovich, Senior Fellow for Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and former Ambassador-at-Large and Special Adviser to Secretary of State Madelyn Albright for policy toward the states of the former Soviet Union; and Andrei  Illarionov, an adviser to former Russian President Vladimir Putin from 2000-2005 and a current Cato Institute Visiting Fellow. Hudson President Herbert London moderated.
