held a conference on

Improving Education and Earnings

For Low-Income Students

Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to noon

Hudson Institute: Betsy and Walter Stern Conference Center

1015 15th Street, N.W., 6th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20005

Although postsecondary education is now essential for getting a high-paying job, students from low-income families are underrepresented at every milestone in the educational pipeline.  This limits their ability to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty. What educational pathways lead to high-paying careers that may improve social mobility?

CNA Senior Economist Louis Jacobson and CNA Research Analyst Christine Mokher presented new evidence from the State of Florida in a study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that relates educational achievement to earnings. Click here to view their presentation. Their findings are summarized in a report issued by Hudson Institute and CNA, Pathways to Boosting the Earnings of Low-Income Students by Increasing Their Educational Attainment. The report can be found here.

Panel discussants included: Professor Thomas Bailey, Columbia University Teachers College; Professor Anthony Carnevale, Georgetown University; Chester E. Finn, Thomas B. Fordham Foundation; Diana Furchtgott-Roth, Hudson Institute; and Frederick Hess, American Enterprise Institute.
