Living with the Gates Foundation

Event Description

In his introduction to the September 2011 issue of Alliance magazine, Philanthropy Action editor Timothy Ogden noted that its articles would address these questions: “How influential is the Gates Foundation today? What impact is it having not just on philanthropy but on society? Are there dangers and downsides to such a large actor in proportion to other philanthropic institutions? If so, how serious are they? Can they be mitigated and if so, how?”

We at the Bradley Center agree that these questions are important, and that Alliance's writers provided balanced and thoughtful answers to them. So we were proud to co-host with the magazine a panel discussion on December 6th, featuring Philanthropy Action editor Timothy Ogden; Darin McKeever of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Duke University's Edward Skloot; and Laura Freschi of New York University's Development Research Institute. Hudson Institute's William Schambra moderated the discussion.
