WASHINGTON On Wednesday, November 9th Hudson Institute will host an address by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) on the importance of maintaining our defense budget to national security strategy. The Deficit Reduction "Super Committee" is soon expected to release recommendations on reducing the budget of the federal government. By cutting defense spending, we may be endangering our national security. As Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno said during a House Armed Services Committee hearing last Thursday, "Cuts of this magnitude would be catastrophic to the military." At this address, Senator Cornyn will argue that the defense strategy should drive defense spending, not the other way around.
Senator Cornyn currently sits on the Senate Finance, Judiciary, Armed Services, and Budget Committees. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002 and previously served in Texas as a District Judge, a member of the Texas Supreme Court, and as Texas Attorney General.
Hudson President & CEO Kenneth Weinstein will introduce the Senator. A question and answer session, moderated by Amy Kauffman, Hudson's Director of Congressional Relations, will follow the Senator's remarks.
